Yesterday was one of those rare days that come maybe only a few times a year. It was colder than normal, sunny, sky a deep blue with no clouds.
The forecast called for a winter storm to hit with freezing rain, snow, sleet etc, the next day.
I decided to make the most of the day by going out to the park and do some long distance rollerblading.
Cold at first, but gradully warmed up after a few miles, then started sweating as the cold sun's rays hit my dark clothes.
There was little traffic, one of the things I really detest, so it was incredible to glide alone for miles and miles, hour after hour. I stopped at my hallfway point; I was intending to do 30 miles, went to the car for a snack of sunflower seeds and some pop to get myself some more energy for the final laps.
It is a wonderful feeling, to get away from the constant chatter, the hype, the internet, media, and to find oneself in an elemental place where your own body's energy and muscles is being used to transport yourself instead of vegetating and relying on someone else, or a "motor". The elemental sun, wind, cold air, inhaling exhaling, gliding, seeing nature glide past and forget about the minutae of life and living is a joy to the soul and a reminder that when we remove ourselves from nature and live an artificial existence in cities, internet, etc, we are only robbing ourselves of life and vitality.
It's sad that it has to end, that one has to get back to society and its insane and incessant demands, but for now I will do it as much as I can to retain my health and sanity.
I yearn for another day, another hour spent in the Pleistocene.
